Once famed for its warehouses, cotton mills, viaducts and canals which all played a key role in the industrial revolution. In 2019, Manchester is a thriving 21st Century City with an ever changing skyline. A wonderful juxtaposition of old and new including Contemporary, Modern, Georgian, Roman and Gothic.
Manchester began when a wooden fort was built in Castlefield by the Roman army in about 79AD. The Romans called it Mamucium – thought to represent a Latinisation of an original Celtic name, meaning “breast-shaped hill”. The Latin name for Manchester is often given as Mancuniun. (Hence, Republic of Mancunia!)
Today, Manchester encompasses one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country and comprises 10 metropolitan boroughs called Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport,Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Salford and Manchester.
Some of Manchester’s most iconic buildings and developments include John Rylands Library, Neo-gothic Town Hall, Manchester Cathedral, Central Library, Beetham Tower, Deansgate Square, Media City and many more.
Outside of London, Manchester and Salford arguably have the highest concentration of fantastic Art Galleries in Manchester. Our picks include The Whitworth, Manchester Art Gallery, Castefield Gallery, Holden Gallery, Caustic Coastal, The Lowry, Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, HOME Manchester, The Turnpike, Paradise Works, Touchstones Rochdale.
And.. In Manchester, it doesn’t rain all the time! Despite what you may think, the county’s average annual rainfall is 806.6 millimetres compared to the UK average of 1125 millimetres. Its ill-conceived reputation most likely originated from a misleading climate map from 1926.
