Manchester began when a wooden fort was built in Castlefield by the Roman army in about 79AD. The Romans called it Mamucium – thought to represent a Latinisation of an original Celtic name, meaning “breast-shaped hill”. The Latin name for Manchester is often given as Mancuniun. (Hence, Republic of Mancunia!)
Today, Manchester encompasses one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country and comprises 10 metropolitan boroughs called Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport,Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Salford and Manchester.
