The University of Manchester is a public research university, formed in 2004 by the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technoology and Victoria University of Manchester. The University of Manchester is a ‘red brick university’, a product of the civic university movement of the late 19th century.
The main campus is south of Manchester City Centre. In 2016/17, the university had 40,490 students and 10,400 staff, making it the second largest university in the UK (out of 167 including the Open University), and the largest single-site university. The University of Salford, Manchester is a public research university in Salford, Greater Manchester, England, 1 mile west of Manchester city centre. The Royal Technical Institute, Salford, which opened in 1896, became a College of Advanced Technology in 1956 and gained university status, following the Robbins Report into higher education, in 1967. It has 19,995 students and is in 160 acres of parkland on the banks of the River Irwell.
